Anno 2018 lijkt het een peulenschil om je muziek online te krijgen en gehoord te worden via Spotify, Apple Music of Deezer. Als je achter het vakje 'label' nog een toffe naam invult ben je direct een officiële platenmaatschappij. Maar dan komt de grote vraag 'hoe krijg ik nu meer streams?' En als die streams er komen wordt het nog erger: 'Hoe betaal ik mijn featuring artist uit?' Of er is interesse uit het buitenland voor een licentie: 'Wat moet ik met dat contract en hoe werkt dat?'

DIY kan dan ineens heel erg eenzaam worden, dus daarom zoeken veel startende labels aansluiting bij collega labels. Of er wordt een samenwerking aangegaan met een distributeur die veel werk uit handen neemt.

In dit panel komen een aantal labels aan het woord, die op de een of andere manier een samenwerking hebben met andere marktpartijen, maar gestart zijn uit liefde voor muziek en een wens om zelf controle te houden. Hoe doen ze dat? Wat waren hun overwegingen? Welke fouten hebben ze gemaakt? Welke tips zijn essentieel om 'Do it yourself' te zijn, maar 'Do it together' te werken.

Right after his Audio Engineer degree Pinas started working in the music business. Now more than 10 years later he has worked with several prominent artists like De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, Jennie Lena, Steffen Morrison, Gers Pardoel, The Flexican, Shirma Rouse and many others. His experience and knowledge include label services, artist management, audio engineering and tour management. Through hard work and dedication he has built his label KRUGANG. KRUGANG is a Dutch indie label with an international vision. Representing great artists like Sabrina Starke, Sarah–Jane and Drummakid.

After graduating law school, Edwin Korver took his first steps in the music business at Dutch distributor Mox Music and Warner Music. Since 2002 he is label manager at Belgian record label and distributor N.E.W.S. for all exclusive distribution labels. N.E.W.S. distribution has helped develop the career of Belgian artists like Brihang and Arsenal and represents a diverse roster of labels like Monkeytown, Moshi Moshi and Brownswood in the Benelux.

Michel Peek has been working in the music industry as a professional for over 13 years. After working as a tour manager for Dutch artists during college, he started as an artist manager at AT Productions in 2007, representing various artists like Mr. Polska and Within Temptation. In collaboration with Boaz van de Beatz he set up the label Nouveau Riche Music. After 7 years Michel moved to MusicAllStars (Spinnin’ Records) and worked as an A&R manager. In 2016 he decided to become self-employed and started the organisation Bravoure Music with two partners servicing urban/hiphop artists on management, label and publishing activities. Since 2016 he joined STOMP (the Dutch trade organisation for independent labels) as a Project Coordinator, organizing various activities for Dutch independent labels like the yearly STOMP Membersday. Michel is also a lecturer at Tilburg University on artist management.

Alexander Beets has been head teacher of Business at the Fontys Rockacademie in Tilburg since the year 2000 and also a professional performer/saxophonist with over 2000 concerts worldwide to his name. He holds many other positions including president of the board of the Dutch labour union for musicians, festival director of Amersfoort Jazz since the year 2000, board member of collecting society Norma, director of the Maxanter Music Group BV and former board member of Popcoalitie.
