Whatever the personal and artistic ingredients that define a true international superstar might be, it is clear that Martin Garrix has them all. He is the winner of the 2017 Popprijs, number one on the DJ Mag Top 100 list, counts Justin Bieber as a close friend and he collaborates with a-list artists such as Usher, Dua Lipa, and Troye Sivan, plus he was the face of Armani Exchange last year. But it is not all smooth-sailing, and, as his much publicised split with Spinnin' Records demonstrated, every artist needs a great team to ensure that things run as smoothly as possible. But what do the team behind Martin Garrix really do and how can their good work help an artist to make the step from being known and loved to massively, globally famous? How do key members of the team, including Watse de Jong (his manager) and José Woldring (his publicist) divide responsibilities and make sure that all he has to do is be himself? What does it really take to keep the Martin Garrix music machine on the right track?
